Melting Point Radio 7/8/09: Songs that inspire us to ROCK! Guitar, keys, drums, and bass, oh my!

These are songs that inspire the best in us. They make us want to join the bands on stage, take up an instrument, and add our own little something to the mayhem. Any instrument is fair game. We've divided things up a bit between instruments, or at least inserted our own commentary for most of the songs, so give a listen... then respond in the comments with your thoughts, and certainly any songs we left out!

Due to the nature of the genre, there is a preponderance of guitar songs. Oh, and both DJ's Yuletide and Jack actually DID begin playing guitar because of THESE SONGS! Jack made us proud, having had the honor to shred Episode 666 (see playlist) in front of a live audience at none other than the WORCESTER PALLADIUM, perhaps the MOST METAL venue ever (insert citation here...)?

Something eerie happened to me during the first few days of school. It was night and most appliances in my room were turned off, but I kept hearing really low strains of music. I attributed it to sensitive ears and somebody else's music. But it happened again, and determined that I was not losing my mind, finally found the source of the music. My speakers, which were hooked up to my computer, seemed to get the airwaves of WRMC so I could hear 91.1 FM whether I was actually tuned in or not, even if my computer was off as well. Because of this strange phenomenon, I now hear WRMC at nearly all times. Even with my own music on, I can hear echoes of another song in the background. Although avoidable if I cut the power to the speakers, this auditory invasion had become a minor source of frustration.

However, a couple of days ago, while attempting to do my homework, I heard two DJs talking about their show and introducing the songs. Their music of choice was metal, which is practically a galaxy away from the orbit of my musical taste. But their theme for the night was covers, so I heard metal bands playing songs anywhere from Phantom of the Opera to ABBA. It was surprisingly good and refreshing, and got me thinking about where and when I had developed this aversion to metal. I had no idea. It wasn't that I had an unpleasant experience with that genre per se, but that I enjoyed other types of music so much to the point where I had stopped exploring and appreciating.

Witold "Vitek" Kieltyka, RIP

Drummer Witold "Vitek" Kieltyka of the Polish extreme metal band DECAPITATED passed away in a Russian hospital from injuries sustained in a recent road collision. He was 23 years old.

This is such a tragedy for the metal community. I just found out today, as I was abroad in Mongolia since August. It's completely surreal reading the progressing news reports, first an accident... then surgery but recovering, then DEAD?! I don't even know what to say. My heart is with the families, and of course COVAN who should know the entire world of metalheads are pulling for his recovery. I'm wearing my Decapitated shirt in the honor of these incredible men and musicians. I sent a few dollars to the fund as well, hopefully it'll make this whole ordeal a little easier for everyone involved.

One of the youngest and most promising drummers in the genre, together with Decapitated he has consistently released albums both crushing and invigorating in their musicianship. Extremely talented – he has been involved in other side projects: Dies Irae, Panzer X.

He will be missed and can not be replaced. The metal scene will be much sorrier with his passing…

Sabbatical

Well everyone, it's been a great run, and I hope you've enjoyed the show these past few years... With tear-filled eyes I must now give you the sad news: indeed, Melting Point Radio will be taking a short break, to return en force in the Spring of 2008!

Jack will be in New Zealand spreading metal to the high and lowlands, while Alex heads to the steppes of Mongolia, and Toby will hold the fort back in Vermont.
